A closer look
An Overview of Hlanganani
Location:
The Hlanganani drop-off center and offices are located at Junxion Center (Junction Church), on Winnie Mandela Drive, just past Dainfern Square.
Our main “home base” since 2015, however, is located in Tanganani, Diepsloot.
The children reside with their guardians in various locations across Diepsloot, Lanseria, and Cosmo City. Please note: The children do not reside with us in a permanent home/residential facility. Therefore, we do not see them on a daily basis.
Home-Based Carers:
At present, we have five trained Home-Based Carers (HBCs) who oversee the children’s well-being. All HBCs go through a training course, specifically designed to equip them with the tools they need to succeed in mentoring one of the children. They are all volunteers, with employment in different fields of work; however, they receive a set stipend to ensure they have the funds needed to visit and support the children they mentor. Monthly reports are submitted to administer and sustain accountability.
Each HBC has an average of seven children under their care. They ensure the children’s physical, emotional, mental, educational, and spiritual needs are being met to the best of their ability. They strive to visit the children in person bimonthly, as well as speak with them telephonically on a regular basis.
Our Child & Family Co-ordinator further ensures that all HBCs are meeting with their children and supports them in this role.
Children:
Hlanganani currently cares for 35 vulnerable and orphaned children spanning the regions of Diepsloot, Lanseria, and Cosmo City. The children range in age from 3 to 18 years old.
Once they matriculate, we continue to support them if they desire to pursue higher education and/or job skill training. We currently support four young adults studying further.
In order to be a part of Hlanganani, the children need to submit their school reports quarterly as well as attend the monthly mentorship group. Attendance at the monthly tutoring group is also required for all middle-school and high-school students.
Group Meeting Times:
As an organization, we meet with all the children together twice per month. This occurs on the first Sunday of each month from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm for biblical teaching and mentorship in Diepsloot.
The second time is on the third Saturday of each month in Dainfern from 9:30 to 3:30 for educational/tutoring support.
There are sometimes exceptions to these days/times.
