As part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening the Hlanganani family units, we recently hosted a workshop for eighteen guardians. The day began with an opening prayer led by Lungile, one of our Home-Based Carers, followed by introductions and heartfelt testimonies from the caregivers sharing the impact Hlanganani has had on their families. Many spoke emotionally about how the food parcels, 1:1 mentorship, study support, and educational outings have helped meet their children’s needs and created new opportunities for growth.

Lungile shared a devotional on the important role of the home in teaching God’s love, values, and strong principles. Sharon, our Child & Family Coordinator, then led a practical session on positive parenting, covering topics such as building trust, understanding children’s needs, improving communication, encouraging good behaviour, and nurturing children through prayer.

The guardians found the workshop both informative and encouraging, appreciating the opportunity to discuss the challenges of raising orphaned and vulnerable children. The session concluded with a reminder that Hlanganani’s carers are always available to provide support, ensuring that no caregiver has to face these challenges alone.

Dear Hlanganai Family, we just want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts for everything you pour into us. For the love, the support, and always creating a place where we feel seen, encouraged to thrive for success. Your generosity doesn’t go unnoticed. Because of you, we’re growing stronger in the Lord and closer to one another. We’re truly grateful for the way you pour into us and everything you provide for us. Lots of love. From the Q. Family

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and community partners, our Food Pantry continues to be a vital source of encouragement and practical assistance for the families in our care. Throughout the month, families are able to access nutritious food, household essentials, and toiletries whenever the need arises.

Donations of healthy protein-rich foods, fresh ingredients, comforting soups, and pies help ensure that children receive the nourishment they need to grow, learn, and thrive. At the same time, household supplies and personal care items ease the financial burden on caregivers, allowing them to direct limited resources toward other pressing needs. Even the sweets and treats donated bring moments of joy and celebration to children who often face significant challenges.

Together, these gifts do far more than fill cupboards—they communicate love, dignity, and hope, reminding our children and families that they are supported by a caring community that believes in their future.

Our monthly mentorship groups continue to provide a safe and encouraging space where children can build confidence, develop leadership skills, and discover their talents. Through presentations, skits, dances, and group activities, they practice public speaking, improve their English communication skills, and learn the value of teamwork and responsibility. These opportunities help children grow in confidence, celebrate one another’s achievements, and develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

We are also equipping our children with practical life skills that will serve them well into adulthood. A recent bread-baking lesson was a huge success, teaching children valuable cooking skills while reinforcing mathematical concepts such as measurement, fractions, and problem-solving. Through hands-on activities like these, children gain confidence, independence, and a love for learning.

This month, we were privileged to enrol two new children into our programme. As their guardians received food parcels and learned about the support available through Hlanganani, they were overcome with emotion, shedding tears of joy and gratitude. Their response was a powerful reminder of how much hope practical support can bring to families facing immense challenges.

It is estimated that there are approximately 35,000 orphans and vulnerable children living in Diepsloot alone, highlighting the tremendous need that exists within the community. Every child welcomed into the Hlanganani family is another young life given the opportunity to be cared for, supported, and equipped to thrive. We are deeply grateful to our sponsors and supporters who make this life-changing work possible.

As we reach the winter solstice and experience some of the coldest days and longest nights of the year, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our generous sponsors. Because of your support, the children with the greatest needs have received warm tracksuits and cozy winter pyjamas, helping them stay comfortable, healthy, and protected from the winter chill.

One of our young girls recently shared that she had not gone to school that day, due to “pyjama day”, as she did not own any pyjamas—but now, thanks to your generosity, she does! These gifts provide far more than physical warmth—they remind each child that they are loved, valued, and cared for. Thank you for helping ensure that our children can face the winter season with comfort and joy.
