A Tremendous Start To The School Year
In January, our children stepped into a new school year — a moment filled with both anticipation and uncertainty. Along with the excitement also came the reality that new uniforms, shoes, and essential stationery supplies were needed. As the cost of these items often exceeds R2,000 per child, these basics are simply out of reach for many of the orphaned and vulnerable children we serve.
However, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, each child was equipped not only with what they needed practically in regards to school clothes and stationery supplies, but also with confidence and dignity. The children were able to walk into their schools feeling prepared and proud, ready to embrace new opportunities and thrive. A big thank you to our partners for being true “Back to School” heroes and for making going back to school a positive experience for our children.
Building Brighter Tomorrows
We are incredibly delighted to celebrate a remarkable step in the lives of five of our young adults — each one having successfully matriculated is now stepping into their first year of college and further studies. Each is pursuing a unique path, with fields ranging from a Higher Certificate in Law to Boiler Making & Welding, reflecting both their unique passions and the diverse opportunities ahead of each one of them.
This achievement represents far more than academic success; it marks the beginning of new, brighter futures filled with possibility and purpose. These young men and women are breaking cycles and stepping boldly into spaces that once felt out of reach.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors, whose unwavering support is making these journeys possible. Your investment not only opens doors to higher education but also empowered these students with hope, confidence, and the chance to build meaningful, independent lives.
“Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!”
Our children recently enjoyed a special day out at the Johannesburg Zoo — a joyful outing filled with discovery, laughter, and unforgettable memories. For many of them, opportunities to step outside their informal settlements and experience new environments are rare, making days like this incredibly meaningful in broadening their horizons and opening their eyes to the world beyond their everyday surroundings.
From seeing their favorite animals up close to learning fascinating new facts, the day was both exciting and enriching. They shared a lovely picnic lunch, received wonderful goodie bags, and embraced the simple joy of playing, exploring, and just being children. Moments like these create lasting memories while inspiring hope and possibility. Thank you to all those at SEI who made this special day possible!
Building Dignity
We are grateful to share the completion of a new outdoor pit latrine for one of our families — a simple yet life-changing addition to their home. Access to safe and dignified sanitation is something many of us take for granted, and now, for this family, it brings them improved health, privacy, and a renewed sense of dignity.
This project not only helps prevent the spread of illness but also creates a safer environment, especially for the two children and their Gogo, who no longer have to share a communal latrine. Thank you to our generous supporters who made this possible — your kindness continues to bring practical hope and a lasting impact to the underprivileged families in our community.
One Room At A Time
We are delighted to share a progress update on the beautification process of our base in Diepsloot. Our tutoring room/classroom is fixed up and already being well used, as is our growing library. The three bedrooms are furnished and welcoming to our children. This space creates a warm, safe environment where they can come and spend weekends and holidays being nurtured holistically, as well as a safe house when needed.
Here, they receive help with homework after school, engage in Bible study, and benefit from intentional one-on-one counseling that speaks to their individual needs. In addition, something as simple yet impactful as having their clothing washed and cared for brings relief to both the children and their guardians.
We are also excited to be adding a deep freeze in the upcoming days, which will allow us to safely store donated frozen chicken — ensuring that the children can enjoy nutritious meals during their visits, at group gatherings, and as the need arises. Alongside this, a lovely new oven will create opportunities for the children to learn valuable life skills as they bake cakes and prepare a variety of foods from scratch, building confidence and creativity in the kitchen.
These additions are more than just practical improvements — they represent care, provision, and the opportunity for every child to grow, feel valued, and thrive in a place they can truly call their own.
